The Storlien or Undersåker choice is the obvious fork in the south. Further north there are two more alternative routes.
Klimpfjäll to Hemavan#
Most Vita Bandet tracks stay east of Lapplandsleden and still drop into Hemavan. That line is shorter and a bit lower.
Lapplandsleden is the marked winter trail on the west side. It stays more in the mountains. There are a few unlocked Länsstyrelsen huts along it; But some nights camping is mandatory. There are shops in Klimpfjäll, and then in Hemavan.
I prefer the west line. It is longer — on these tracks about 146 km against 117 km — and the kalfjäll can be windy. The eastern route seems to have more road travel in it. Depending on the weather and snow conditions, I may change my mind.
Red is Lapplandsleden. Blue is a typical Band track on the east side.
Abisko to Treriksröset#
From Abisko most people cross Torneträsk and stay on the Swedish side all the way to the cairn. It looks efficient, but rather flat.
I want Nordkalottleden through Norway: Lappjord, Altevatnet, then the DNT huts north toward Pältsa and Treriksröset. I skied that trail in early May 2013. It is a proper trek. The huts have no shop, so the food has to come from Abisko. I have a DNT key.
Pältsa is closed by the time I would get there in April 2027, so the last night is tent anyway.
The two finishes are about the same length on the map. The Norway line just has more mountain in it.
Red is Nordkalottleden. Blue is the usual Swedish finish.
Conditions on the day can still change this. Same as Storlien.
