Joining to Storlien

·9 mins

This is the opening leg if you want about nine ski days, then a train. We start at Grövelsjön and ski to Storlien. You stop there. I rest a day and continue north.

Own pulk, own food. We share one tent and one stove. Helags, Sylarna, and Blåhammaren are closed until 5 March, so the alpine nights are tent.

Working dates from a 5 February start. They will slip with weather. Days 1–9 are the trip together. Days 10–14 are the next stretch, so you can see what is ahead if you stay on past Storlien.

From the Amsterdam / Amersfoort area. Fares are advance prices from current listings. They move. A hotel night is separate from the ticket. February 2027 times are not all published yet.

Via Mora
#

Drive to Mora, or come by train. Then the same bus to Grövelsjön. If you drove, the car waits in Mora.

Car. About 1,600–1,800 km, 18–22 h of driving, 1–2 nights on the road. Winter, via Denmark or a ferry from Germany to Sweden.

Train, then the bus. About a day and a night, 3 changes (Hamburg, Stockholm, Mora). One-way tickets per person, bought ahead, about €110–180.

HopTimeChangesOne way / person
ICE, Amersfoort or Amsterdam → Hamburg4–4.5 h0often €20–50 (from ~€33)

SJ Stockholm → Mora~3 h 50, afternoon0about 350 SEK (from ~189)
Dalatrafik 396 Mora → Grövelsjön fjällstationen~3 h 20060 SEK

Take the afternoon SJ. The night train reaches Stockholm after the morning train has left, so you sleep in Mora and ride the bus the next day. The 396 you want ends at Grövelsjön fjällstationen. Some trips stop short of it. Autumn 2026 pattern: weekday directs around 14:35 and 16:22, weekend 07:20. Skis and a pulk go in the hold if there is room. The driver decides. Fuel stays off the bus. Check Dalatrafik.

Back to Mora. One travel day, 1 change in Östersund. One-way tickets about 400–550 SEK per person. The Storlien train is in Out from Storlien.

On weekdays the useful 46 is early afternoon, so you wait in Östersund after the train. Sunday 14 February is thinner. Check ltr.se.

If you came by train, Mora back to the Netherlands is those three hops in reverse. Another ~€110–180 per person, another 3 changes, another day and a night.

Car to Grövelsjön
#

Drive all the way and leave the car there. Three ways. The drive home is the same choice backwards.

All road, via Denmark and Mora. Mora → Grövelsjön is about 190 km and 2.5 h, so the Netherlands → Grövelsjön is about 1,800–2,000 km and 21–25 h of driving, 2 nights on the road.

Via Oslo, on the Hirtshals–Larvik ferry. This skips Sweden and the bridge tolls. The crossing is about 3 h 45, in a seat.

  • To Hirtshals, through Germany and Denmark: about 970 km, 10 h. A long day, or one night in northern Denmark.
  • Color Line Hirtshals → Larvik. In winter often one or two sailings a day. A current timetable has a midday departure and a late evening one that reaches Larvik around 03:00. One way from about €53 per person when four people share one car. Two people with a car pay more. Book both ways and the return is 10% off. Bring a passport. February times: check Color Line.
  • Larvik → Oslo: about 130 km, 1.5 h. Oslo → Grövelsjön: about 330 km, 4.5–5 h, via Elverum, Trysil, and Drevsjø, then the border road. Together about 460 km and 6.5 h after the ferry. February snow makes the last part slower. Winter tyres. Check vegvesen.no.

Driving on this route is about 1,430 km and 16–17 h, plus the crossing. A midday ferry can put you in Grövelsjön that evening. The late ferry means the mountain road the next morning.

Via Oslo, on the Copenhagen ferry. This is the night boat. You wake up in Oslo and drive the same mountain road.

  • To Copenhagen, through Germany and Denmark: about 800 km, 9 h. A long day if you want the same afternoon’s sailing.
  • Go Nordic Cruiseline Copenhagen → Oslo: daily 16:30 → 10:00, 17.5 h. One way for two people and a VW bus, cabin included, is about €150–190. Bring a passport. February times: check the sailing schedule.
  • Oslo → Grövelsjön: about 330 km, 4.5–5 h, the same Elverum / Trysil / Drevsjø road. Slower in February snow.

Driving on this route is about 1,130 km and 14 h, plus the night on the boat. A morning start can make the 16:30 sailing, and Grövelsjön the next afternoon.

Back to the car. The Storlien → Mora hops above, then a night in Mora. The afternoon bus arrives after the last 396. Next morning the same bus: ~3 h 20, no change, 60 SEK. Then drive home on one of the roads above. One-way tickets for this return are about 450–600 SEK per person, 2 changes (Östersund, then Mora the next morning). The hotel is extra. If Sunday’s 46 misses the train, sleep in Östersund and take the bus the next day. Check ltr.se, Dalatrafik, and Resrobot.

Day 5 is the climb past Svalåtjärn. Days 7 and 8 are the alpine stretch, west of the closed stations. Day 9 is the long drop into Storlien (↓804 m), past Blåhammaren with no camp there. Hävlingestugorna is a Länsstyrelsen cabin (book it). Broktjärnskojan is an unlocked rest hut. Enkälen is emergency rest only, so the night is in the tent beside it. Rogen’s STF hut opens 19 February, after we have passed.

Day 12’s camp is on the line near Skalstugan, not at the Anjan bus stop. Kolåsen itself is the day after this table.

Out from Storlien
#

This is the local exit. Night in town (STF Storliens fjällgård or Högfjällshotell). Morning train toward Östersund. From there, back to Mora or on to the car at Grövelsjön, is From the Netherlands.

On the Norrtåg timetable for 10 August – 12 December 2026, weekday and weekend trains leave Storlien at 09:27 and 18:37. The 09:27 is in Östersund C at 11:27. The national timetable changes in mid-December, so February 2027 will not be this sheet. Check Norrtåg and SJ before you book. Skis and a packed pulk are luggage; ask when you buy the ticket.

If you come out at Anjan
#

Anjan is a stop on road 336, west of Kall, on Länstrafiken bus 551 (Kallsedet – Kall – Järpen). The 551 does not run Saturday or Sunday. The outer stops, Anjan included, are often only if you book. Call 0771-820 083 by 16:00 the weekday before.

On the 2025 timetables (28 April – 20 August) the morning bus leaves Anjan about 06:20 and is at Järpen biblioteket at 08:00. I have not seen an evening bus from Anjan back toward Järpen on those sheets. Treat 06:20 as the pattern, not a February promise. Confirm on ltr.se.

From Järpen to Östersund, same Norrtåg period, weekdays toward Östersund C:

JärpenÖstersund C
06:2707:21
10:3211:27
12:3013:25
15:3116:25
19:3920:35

The 06:27 leaves before the morning bus arrives. The connection after an 08:00 arrival in Järpen is the 10:32. Saturday adds an 08:33 from Järpen, but 551 does not run then. Bus 156 also runs Järpen – Östersund and may beat the train; check it on the same site. Skis go in the luggage hold if there is room. The driver decides. No fuel bottles on the bus.

If you come out at Kolåsen
#

Kolåsen is the same bus, further out the road, and it is thinner. Most days 551 ends at Kallsedet, about 10 km before the hotel. To be picked up at Kolåsen itself you book the T trip on 551: same number, 0771-820 083, by 16:00 the weekday before. Kolåsens Fjällhotell describes the same bus, and they will fetch you from Kallsedet if you ask them when you book a bed.

On the spring 2025 sheet the booked trips left the Kolåsen stops late morning and mid-afternoon and reached Järpen about 14:40 and 17:15. From there the 15:31 or 19:39 train is the match, if those times still exist. Kallsedet, without the extra booking, had a weekday 06:45 → Järpen 08:00 and an afternoon bus around 17:00.

There is no weekend 551. If you arrive at the road on a Saturday, you are waiting until Monday or calling a taxi from Järpen or Åre.

The day named Kolåsen in the full plan is the camp at Kallsedet, not the hotel. The hotel is the detour, and the bus stop you can count on without a phone call.
